Snapshot No. 820-824

824. KEK

KEK B factory 4 Visited KEK at Tukuba on the "open to the public day".

This is the second time in 40 years after the TRISTAN project started there.

By utilizing the same tunnel as before, 11m below the ground surface, 3km total length and 10m diameter,
It has modified to the accelator, called Super KEK B, to make electron e and positron e+ beams of different energy levels collide against each other.

An interesting aspect here is that;
In the case of TRISTAN where the e and e+ of the same energy level being used, they could be collided by letting them rotate in the opposite directrion inside a single ring,
while in the present KEK B utilizing e and e+ of different energy level has to adopt separate ring for each of them.

The quantumn world is far from human's normal senses.

In order to understand that peculiar world, we have no way other than to use the apparatus which we can understand with our normal sense and materialize.

Thus, it becomes a huge cluster of ultra-high vacuum apparatus, ultra-high voltage equipment, high-power high-frequency osscillators, electromagnet groups including superconducting type, neutrino detector of a size of huge building, large computer system. We will never lose interest in seeing any of them.

Below shows a part of the tunnel inside, corresponding to 1/50 of the 3-km total lenght,

The follwoing shows the ordinary type electromagnets which are extensively used all the way through the rings.

KEK B factory Hmmm. Looks the most basics of basics.

Seeing this, many might remember the electromagnet which they at childhood made by coiling nearby wire around a big nail.

BTH. I remember my experience to engage in making windings for general use mortors at a small factory when I was a student.

In those days, the required work is, to fix a tip of enameled wire to a wooden frame of turtle shape, and to tred on the foot switch. Then the wooden frame start rotating and the three-digit mechanical counter rotate accordingly. To stop the foot switch upon coming close to the required numbers and apply a brake at the right winding number.

For a 5-hp motor, the assembled coil was a size of B5 notebook.

It was a real simple works and, in a matter of a week, I managed to make much more products than the veterans of the shop.

823.@Air-conditioning hornets 2

Today's noon-time look of the suzume-bati's nest which was shown here about 3 weeks ago (nr.820).

Suzume-bati Looks they nibbled away the entrance right side and broadened the frontage.

Probably because the nest inside the tree hollow got larger than before, many hornets stand still at the entrance and are blowing the air into the nest with loud buzz.

822.@Ko-sagi

The hisi   cluster at the Kasima-river estuary looks lackluster probably due to the prolonged high temperature.

Ryuujin bridge Ryuujin bridge 2

On the hisi   thicket is a ko-sagi.

We commonly call sira-sagi   for the white egret. But, in this area, they are any one of the large-, medium-, small- (dai-, chuu-, shou-/ko-)   egret,   i.e.   dai-sagi, chuu-sagi, ko-sagi.

Their beak colors change depending on the season, and in size too, there are individual differences. At a rare occation, non-native species come, and further their subspecies exist.

Thus it is very hard to identify xxx-egret. However, the head topknot and yellow toes are seen only in ko-sagi.

821. Once upon a time

"Prince of Wales" berthing at Tokyo Daiba.

With this name, those who think of the "Naval battle off Malaya", and "Type-96 and type-1 attack planes" must be elderly.

Prince of Wales

As in the photo, two bridges at the starboard. Looks one for navigation and the other for flight.
Further two side-elevators at the same side.
Thus, she berthes at the starboard, in opposite to usual ships.

Not steam-turbine propusion, but of gas-turbine and electrical.

Prince of Wales 2 Prince of Wales 3

F35-B aboard is said to be 24 units. One unit is still at Kagosima airport after the emergency landing there.

The berthed location is the area where the former "Ship Science Museum" existed. The "rainbow bridge" is a bit further right.

820.@An air-conditioning bee

Suzume-bati seen at an old cherry tree in the castle ruin square this morning.

Suzmue-bati This QT stands still at the entrance, and continuosly sends air into the nest by disregarding the incoming and outgoing fellow bees.

Endless booming sound like 4-pole motor working somewhere can be heard even at a far away place.

It is said that suzume-bati   is weak against heat, and is killed by the heat generated by the swarms of small local honeybees.

At this high air temperature, that of the inner nest will be considerable. So air-conditioning is a must.

On the net, many footages showing local honeybees desparately trying killing suzume-bati   are available. Search with the word "heat kill by bee ball"#1, not "Hissatu Sigotonin (Contract Assassin)".

#1:
Looks generally called "thermo-balling" and similar to "asphyxia-balling" in the imported honeybees.
